It's unfinished because they're supposed to be posing for a paparazzi picture, with other paparazzi/background, but I just got so sick of drawing the picture. But I do like what I've done, and I think what I've done so far stands as it's own picture.
The Explanation
*deep breath* So... actually, does anyone else ever have a really lengthy explanation that sounds perfect in their head as they draw, but when the time comes to type it down it all comes out in a word-spew?! So apologies for poor grammar and run-on sentences. But, uh, basically, what's going on is that Sonic crossdresses all the time in Sonic Underground. For DISGUISES, but still. Like, up to the point that when he sneaks out to participate in a race, his siblings automatically think some girl's him in disguise. Apparently he does all the time in AoStH too, which, while obviously not serious, got me thinking it was an interesting idea to make an AU where it's a legitimate thing he does.
Like, if you were gonna do an AU where anyone crossdresses, Sonic isn't exactly the type to heed to social expectations, so he's... um, i dunno, interestingly headcannonable? *shrugs* I like crack ideas that border on the edge of correct characterisation.
Anyway, Sonouge being my OTP, I found a way to work Rouge into it. She starts dating Sonic, and given her appearance/style, and what the media tends to make of women like her (as well as the fact that she's helped save the world is probably a secret due to GUN) Sonic decides to start dressing 'girly' in public the same time he makes his relationship with her known in order to distract them from being too bitchy about Rouge. They don't call attention to it or play Sonic's celebrity status up (to Rouge's disappointment), just by walk in public, hand-hold + couple things. But being the media icon he is, they're swarmed pretty much right away.
The media constantly try to get Rouge to say bad things about Sonic's attire, but no-one seems willing to talk about crossdressing outright, so Rouge just trolls them:
Reporter: And just what do you think of your new "boy"friend's choice in fashion?
Rouge: Oh, it's absolutely terrible~!
Reporter: *smirking* So you're not behind it?
Rouge: Of course not! Those gloves with that dress, ugh! And that belt - he does not know how to colour-coordinate.
Reporter: ... *blank stare* ....... Surely you must want him to dress more reasonably around you?
Rouge: What are you suggesting I do, force him to wear the dresses I pick out? That'd be rather domineering.
Of course, the whole thing backfires anyway, with media blaming Rouge for Sonic's new dressing style, but I see Sonic and Rouge as literally the two mobians of the games who give the least shits about others' opinions about their actions.
Before asks, I'm not one of those "dresses equals female" type people. But that DOES bring up an interesting idea: what if, in the Sonic Universe, mobians wearing ANY sort of clothes "meant" female, whereas typical "boy" wear was nakedness apart from shoes/gloves? Like, if I do anymore pictures likes this, I'm likely to draw frills and stuff because it's fun to draw (and I see Sonic as having the fashion sense of a 6 year old). But imagine a guy mobian wearing jeans and a hoodie, and being called a crossdresser because of it!

As to the actual character stuff: I see Rouge as (secretely) admiring people who don't care about other's reactions, finding people's reactions hilarious and enjoying the spotlight.
Sonic just enjoys dressing up in ridiculously clashing, tacky outfits, and I can kinda see him looking out for other people who are bullied for gender noncomformity? Oor rather, people who are bullied for anything in general. (FTR, I see Sonic as a cisboy, just non gender-conforming) Like, I know some might see headcannoning characters like this as weird/unnecessary, but if it fits-! Like, it would be different if there were actual, existing cool non stereotype characters that could be drawn, but nooooo, commandeering other characters is the only option.

I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely love it in Underground when he and Manic would crossdress, it always looked so ridiculous and made no sense, but that's what made it funny. XD I mean think about it, hero of freaking Mobius, dressed up as a girl, it's too good. I never thought someone would take that to the level you've taken it too, and I absolutely love that you went to that level. ^^ It's such a great story, and if this couple ever actually happened, I can totally see this happening. X3 Nice work!
